Vision for the position: The Reading for Life Teacher is a part-time role focused on cultivating a joyful, schoolwide culture of reading in the Lower School and helping advance Hope Academy’s goal that every student who begins kindergarten at Hope Academy is able to read by the end of 3rd grade. This position serves as a reading champion who inspires students, equips families, and strengthens consistent at-home reading habits through engaging school partnerships and ongoing encouragement.
Job Responsibilities
- Build excitement and enthusiasm for reading across the Lower School through creative, engaging, and mission-aligned initiatives.
- Meet with each Lower School class weekly or bi-weekly to introduce books, promote reading habits, and motivate students to grow as readers.
- Work in collaboration with Urban Ventures to coordinate schoolwide reading campaigns, including Reading Races and other family reading initiatives.
- Partner with families by providing practical tools, encouragement, and resources that support reading at home beyond special events or campaigns.
- Track and monitor student and family reading participation data, providing regular updates to school leadership.
- Coordinate opportunities for students and families to receive books during Parent Involvement Day, parent-teacher conferences, and other family events to encourage reading at home.
- Collaborate with teachers, intervention staff, and school leaders to align reading culture efforts with Hope Academy’s literacy goals.
- Identify new opportunities to increase student engagement and strengthen a lifelong love of reading.
Qualifications
- Passion for literacy development and helping children become confident readers.
- Experience working with elementary-aged students and families.
- Strong communication, organization, and relationship-building skills.
- Creative, energetic, and encouraging presence with the ability to motivate others.
- Bachelor’s degree required; Degree in literacy or education strongly preferred.
- Alignment with Hope Academy’s mission, Statement of Faith, and core values.
- A deep love for Jesus Christ and a desire to serve Him by discipling students through education.
- Commitment to working effectively in a multi-racial, multi-ethnic, under-resourced urban context.
Salary range for this part-time position is $23,125-$38,141 based on years of relevant experience.
