Position Overview

The School Nutrition Manager provides on-site leadership for daily food service operations across two cafeterias. This role ensures that nutritious, high-quality meals are prepared and served efficiently, safely, and in alignment with school standards and federal and state guidelines.

The Nutrition Manager oversees food service staff, manages food ordering and inventory, and maintains a clean, organized, and welcoming cafeteria environment that supports students’ well-being and the overall mission of the school.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Leadership

  • Oversee daily operations of two school cafeterias.
  • Ensure meals are prepared and served according to established menus, nutrition guidelines, and portion standards.
  • Maintain efficient meal service that maximizes student participation and minimizes wait times.
  • Monitor food quality, presentation, and consistency across both locations.
  • Reports to the Director of Nutrition.

Staff Supervision & Development

  • Supervise, schedule, and support food service workers in both cafeterias.
  • Provide training on food safety, customer service, and operational procedures.
  • Foster a positive, team-oriented work culture.
  • Conduct performance feedback conversations in coordination with the Director of Nutrition.

Food Ordering & Inventory Management

  • Place all food and supply orders for the school cafeterias.
  • Monitor inventory levels to ensure adequate supply while minimizing waste.
  • Track usage patterns and adjust ordering to maintain cost efficiency.
  • Receive and verify deliveries for accuracy and quality.
  • Maintain organized storage areas that comply with safety standards.

Compliance & Food Safety

  • Ensure full compliance with local, state, and federal nutrition program requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with MDE and USDA school nutrition program rules, including accurate meal counting and claiming, production records, and required reports.
  • Maintain accurate production records and required documentation.
  • Enforce strict food safety, sanitation, and health regulations.
  • Prepare for and support inspections and audits.

Financial Stewardship

  • Support budget adherence through responsible purchasing and inventory control.
  • Monitor food costs and labor efficiency.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce waste and improve operational efficiency.

Student Experience & Culture

  • Help cultivate a welcoming cafeteria environment.
  • Promote respectful interactions between staff and students.
  • Support school culture by ensuring the cafeteria is orderly, clean, and positive.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma required with 1–2 years of food service experience, or an associate degree in lieu of prior food service experience.
  • Knowledge of food safety regulations and nutrition program requirements preferred. CFPM certification provided.
  • Strong organizational and inventory management skills.
  • Ability to supervise and develop team members.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Basic computer skills required, including email, ordering systems, and recordkeeping.
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities across two cafeteria locations.
  • Spanish language proficiency preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and move food and supply items up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to work in kitchen environments with varying temperatures.

Compensation

  • Salary range is $48,000-$52,000 depending on qualifications.
